This panel will detail the process that the 12th grade English team at La Cañada High School took to teach personal narrative writing by having students write their own graphic panel. In using Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel Persepolis, along with sources that employ the language and methods of the comic medium, students explored their own writing as a form of creative nonfiction. Brian Redmond (La Cañada High School) introduces the curriculum and design of the course, while Daryl Bilandzija (La Cañada High School) showcases student graphic panels, and writer and illustrator Chuck Austen (Miracleman, Edgeworld) discusses his visit to the classroom to explore the medium as well as the creative process with students.
